In spring 2016, a group of researchers in the School of Architecture, Design, and Urban Planning and School of Engineering at the University of Kansas organized a think tank titled "Innovations in Rural Healthcare Environments." The symposium brought together more than 100 healthcare providers, policy makers, and designers to outline specific research issues about how innovative design solutions can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of rural healthcare systems. Several major themes emerged from the panel discussions: 1. Rural healthcare facilities will need to adapt to changing practice models and constricted economic conditions by blending themselves into the fabric of the surrounding communities they serve and partner with local communities; 2. "Community Outpatient Hospitals" (COH), a new type of facilities that concentrate on primary and outpatient services, community-based health maintenance programs, and information technology rather than bricks and mortar will replace the obsolete "Critical Access Hospitals" (CAH) model; 3. Future rural healthcare designs should recognize the root causes of community health issues and also address individual uniqueness; 4. One size doesn't fit all. These key themes were used in a research-based design in the Health and Wellness graduate capstone studio. Students explored a range of design options that addressed the ways that traditional rural inpatient hospitals could be repurposed and refocused using Philips and Harper counties in Kansas as examples. In addition to in-depth analysis of socioeconomic status, community health, and physical infrastructures of these two typical rural communities, students also conducted onsite observations, workflow mapping using spaghetti diagrams, and focus group interviews to inform innovative prototypical solutions for rural hospitals. The inter-disciplinary evidence-based design approach has been proven to be effective for student engagement and deeper understanding of rural conditions.

Retrofit options for renewable energy implementation are examined in conjunction with scenarios of building operation. In this study, two different BIM processes have been conducted for the energy modeling: object-oriented geometric information modeling (e.g., envelope, doors, windows, walls, zones, etc.) with a BIM tool and energy modeling (e.g., materials, heat resistance, location, weather data, renewables, etc.) with an energy simulation tool. The simulation model is compared to the real building performance and alternative renewable energy scenarios are evaluated. The results are used to make recommendations for the optimization of building performance and consideration of energy-efficient strategies for building performance enhancement. The research points to discontinuities between photovoltaic panel degradation over time and the LEED credit.

Three building envelope scenarios will be compared to analyze the insulating capacity of concrete 3D printed walls and the predicted energy consumption. The expected utility costs are calculated based on the energy value in the Midwest region of the United States. This paper discusses the potential energy savings with the implementation of renewable energy systems. The analysis is limited to the predicted monthly utility bills to determine which of the scenarios is economically viable within the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's standards for affordability.

In this paper, the current trends in the development of AR applications and the application of AR technologies in the fields of AEC are proposed. Also the relation between AR application and BIM in the AEC industry with the benefits of this integration and possible issues is discussed. The related examples of BIM+AR are described during the literature review. The authors believe the papers presented in this document, cover the latest research trends and developments in the use of AR and its' combination with BIM for AEC applications. In the future, it is expected that AR applications will be further utilized in the AEC field to enhance productivity, safety and efficiency.

Architects have made compelling arguments for a phenomenological understanding of architecture, rooted in the subject and in direct experience, for which the notion of intentionality plays a central role. However, the inherent subjectivity of phenomenology has remained a barrier to its use as an explicit method of design thinking. On the other hand, the wide spread use of parametric modeling, as a tool to capture design intent, has led to theorizing parameterization in architecture.

This study compares three real world educational buildings to become NZEB. Each case study consists of: (1) an energy model; (2) CFD model and (3) a cost model. Three performance criteria are considered: net zero energy (NZE), occupant comfort level and cost-benefit analysis. Energy consumption and generation are quantified using zonal models. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is used to deal with problems associated with the thermal environment and the performance of building façade regarding the natural ventilation and building energy use. Scenarios are explored to identify the optimal NZEB with consideration of indoor comfort level and cost. The results present options to achieve NZEB in educational buildings based on the location, climate and size of the structures. The nature of educational buildings and variability in the operation schedule provide op...

This POE study examines the relationship between building and human performance. LEED-rated building was selected as a case study to analyze its performance after being in operation. The occupants’ satisfaction was evaluated in terms of the thermal comfort and human use with the application of online questionnaire. The environmental impact was determined through various measurements including room temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, lighting levels and carbon emission. The outcomes of this study identify the building systems efficiencies as well as the systems in need of retrofit. The POE results can help building designers address user needs more effectively and fine-tune the systems to improve sustainability.

We examine the interoperability issues between design and analysis in professional practice. We present the results of a case study mapping the activities of two interdisciplinary student teams in the early design phases of a BIM-enabled project. Results show the problems associated with building simulation tools, core knowledge lacking in architectural education, and the relationship between information management, team process, and the types of tools used. A flexible curricular structure is proposed in architectural education, expanding our professional roles.

According to the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), the average lifecycle of a building in a university is 42 years with an EUI (energy use intensity) of 23 kWh/m 2 /y. Current building and energy codes limit the EUI to 16 kWh/m 2 /y for new school buildings; this benchmark can vary depending on climate, occupancy, and other contextual factors. Although the LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) system provides a set of guidelines to rate sustainable buildings, studies have shown that 28%-35% of the educational LEED-rated buildings use more energy than their conventional counterparts. This paper examines the issues specific to a LEED-rated design addition to an existing university building. The forum, a lecture hall expansion of to an existing building at the University of Kansas, has been proposed as environmentally friendly and energy-efficient building addition. Comfort and health aspects have been considered in the design in order to obtain LEED platinum certificate. The forum's energy performance strategies include a double-skin facade to reduce energy consumption and PV (photovoltaic) panels to generate onsite energy. This study considers various scenarios to meet NZEB (net-zero energy building) criteria and maximize energy savings. The feasibility of NZE criteria is evaluated for: (a) seasonal comparison; (b) facility occupancy; (c) PV panels' addition in relation to double skin facade. The results of NZEB approach are compared to LEED platinum requirements, based on RoI (return on investment) and PV panel's efficiency for this specific educational building.
